The Ladies of L'Atelier

Jessi Gerak - Buttons Bones

I was born and raised in the Colorado Rockies and graduated with a BFA in ceramics from Kent State University in 2009. At Kent State, I had the privilege of working with and learning from Kirk Mangus and a slew of incredibly talented grad students.

My last year at Kent was spent as Kirk’s studio and research assistant where we created and studied several styles of Shino glazes, an ancient Japanese traditional glaze. I am still madly in love with crawl Shino (textured white glaze) and the unique and surprising pattern it creates every time.

The name Buttons Bones Pottery comes from my senior show in college; I created a series of wares that included both cute ceramic buttons and creepy ceramic bones and teeth. You may see this style pop up in my shop from time to time for nostalgic reasons (and it looks pretty cool). Additionally, I like pottery to have movement and flow. I like to imagine the clay can still move even after being made solid.

Pottery by Eleni

Helena Falangus Duffy (in Greek, Eleni) is the CEO and Chief Designer at Pottery by Eleni. After a noted 12-year career working as a Costume Designer in Los Angeles’s Film and Television industry, Helena longed for the always-changing, but forever green environment of the Pacific Northwest that first inspired her art. She returned home to Seattle at inopportune timing at the beginning of the pandemic. In spite of this dull and difficult time, Helena found joy and purpose in the founding of Pottery by Eleni. With Pottery by Eleni (pronounced Eh-leh-knee), Helena creates rustic elegant homeware that promotes female empowerment and is environmentally friendly.

COV Home

Today, I am an entrepreneur, a design director, a partner, and a caregiver. I hold a degree in architecture and design from MIT, and after spending years designing products in healthcare and education, the systemic inequities of this country and my own racial privilege is painfully clear. I founded COV Home because I believe I have an opportunity to give back – profits from every purchase are donated to women’s shelters. Our goods bring moments of peace and joy to your home and help those in need of one. Whether I am leading an amazing team that builds whole-child educational products, growing my small business, or expanding my own home across generations – I seek to contribute to a more just and equitable world by leveraging design to maximize human potential and fulfillment.

SouthernChell

I’ve always had a passion for two things: interior design and bringing joy to people’s lives. I used to tell people what I like to do in my free time, which was helping people design interiors and decor. One day, someone explained to me how I could expand my reach and sell my passion with an online store. I’d never heard of this before, and I thought it was a great idea at the time, but I was extremely nervous! I went ahead and decided to do it anyway, and I’ll say it was one of the best decisions of my life because being able to make home decor pieces I truly love myself, and seeing other people love them just as much makes me so happy. And this is how SouthernChell was born.

Michelle Pournia

I’ve been compelled to make things since I was a child. Growing up, I practiced oil painting, acrylics, and woodwork. After obtaining my degree in Marine Science and becoming a Molecular Biologist, I started to practice with epoxy resin in my spare time. Eventually, by July 2020, I left my job to dedicate more time to my passion and opened up my Etsy shop. I am proud to be an artist exclusively and am grateful to be able to do what I love full-time.

Wax on Fire

Hi! I’m Alisha, owner, and founder of Wax on Fire based out of North Swansea, Massachusetts. When I became a mother in 2015, I started to become more vigilant about our household environment and how I could make it healthier for our little one. An obvious change that I could make after researching paraffin wax candles was to switch over to a healthier alternative. During my research, I became intrigued with the candle-making process and decided to handcraft them out of my own home. After countless days and endless nights, I finally nailed down the perfect formula for a clean-burning, long-lasting, magnificent-smelling candle. Through my products, I hope to spread awareness of how important it is to be vigilant of our household environments and the toxicity surrounding us. Wax on Fire is proud to be 100% non-toxic, vegan and animal cruelty-free.
